From: Watership Down
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies.
And whenever they catch you, they will kill you.
But first, they must catch you...
...digger, listener, runner.
Prince with the swift warren.
Be cunning and full of tricks...
...and your people will never be destroyed.
Today I am recognizing a pet that did not have a chance to run, to live as a rabbit should. It died with no food, no water, alone in a small cage. I buried it never having known its name. But today I claim it, I claim that rabbits soul as my pet, and I invite it to join me when I cross the Rainbow Bridge so that it will always have someone to hope to see, someone to look forward to. This pet will not be an abandoned soul.
I am renaming this rabbit Rainbow Brite. I will give it the joy in death that it did not know in life. All the love it should have had while it was alive. I promise to this soul that I will seek justice on its behalf and it's brothers, the dogs in its household will not go through the same agony.
And even more, the dragon mother that protects my household will protect its spirit too, should it choose to come back and visit us. The candle is my invitation for it to see how much I dote on my pets, and of the pets of others. Anyone who asks help will receive it. Whether that is a bagful of food, or a connection who can help take their pet in somewhere in the community. I will give what I have, when I have it, as long as I live.
Our pets are not disposable. Our pets are not forgettable. Our pets are part of our families. They deserve our love and our attention.
